John R. Leas
John R. "Effie" Leas, 83, of Coffee Goss Road, Maytown, died Friday October 6th, at ManorCare Health Services, Elizabethtown. He was the husband of Rose M. Kreider Leas.
Born in Hanover, PA, he was a son of the late Ervin R. and Mary Amspacher Leas. John was a supervisor at I.T.T. Grinnell, Columbia, for 35 years, retiring in April of 1986.
Serving in the Army during WWII, John was in the Battle of the Bulge, Ardennes, in the 285th Field Artillery Observation Battalion. He was the Past President of the union at Grinnell and a member of the I.T.T. Grinnell Foreman's Club. John was Past President of the Maytown Youth Organization, Past President of the E. Donegal Twp. Park Commission, Past President of the E. Donegal Boat Club, Past Commander and member of the American Legion Post #809, Maytown, member of the Ashara Lodge #398 F. & A.M., Marietta, member of the Hi-12 Club, Elizabethtown, and member of St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Maytown. He loved to fish and hunt and in his younger years, was an avid baseball and basketball player. He enjoyed carpentry work.
Surviving besides his wife are four children: Kathleen M. (Jim Stephens) Leas, Maryville, TN, Richard L. (Kim) Leas, Haymarket, VA, Laurie L. Leas, Lancaster, and Michael H. (Joanne) Leas, Maytown; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers, Norman D. (Alice) Leas, Maytown, and Oscar E. Leas, Marietta. He was preceded in death by a brother, Ervin Leas.
Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to attend the funeral Tuesday at 11 A.M. at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Queen Street, Maytown. Interment in Laurel Hills Memorial Garden, Columbia. Friends may call Monday evening at the Smedley Funeral Home, Ltd. 29 N. Gay Street, Marietta, from 6-8 P.M. and Tuesday from 10 A.M. until 11 A.M. at the church. If desired, memorial contributions may be made in John's memory to the Michael J.
