Esther Gates
Esther Gates, 86, of La Crosse died at St. Joseph's Rehabilitation Center on Sunday, Jan. 9, 2005.
She was born in Eitzen, Minn., on Feb. 6, 1918, to Wesley and Hazel (Kringle) Leas. She married Arlan Gates in Waukon, Iowa, on Oct. 24, 1936, and he preceded her in death on Oct. 27, 1993. Prior to her retirement, she had worked for many years in the bakery at Quillin's.
She is survived by two daughters, Rita (Fred) Bagniefski of La Crosse and Kathy (Greg) Dawald of Eau Claire, Wis.; one son, Wayne (Judy) of Viroqua, Wis.; one brother, Orville of Palm Springs, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law; and nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Viola and Pearl; one brother, Clifford; an infant brother; and a special friend, Bob.
Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Jan. 13, at 11 a.m. at Asbury United Methodist Church, 1818 Redfield St. The Rev. Michael Morning will officiate, and burial will be in Mormon Coulee Memorial Park. Friends may call at the church Thursday from 10 a.m. until the time of services.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred. Sletten McKee Hanson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
