Arvid Floyd Leas was born on December 22, 1932 on the Linton Township, Allamakee County, IA, farm of his parents, Arthur Floyd and Helga Louise (Larsen) Leas. He grew up in the rural Waterville, IA area where he attended the rural Sixteen School and started at Waterville High School. For a few years he helped on the family farm. From 1956 to 1958 Arvid was in the US Army where he finished his GED and served much of his time in Germany as a radio and relay operator. Following his discharge he returned to one of the family farms where he raised beef cattle, hogs, and grain and in the early years maintained a dairy herd. On May 1, 1971 Arvid married Hedy Rose Buerger at Zion United Church of Christ in Waukon, IA.
Arvid was a life-long member of Rossville Presbyterian Church where he was confirmed and later held numerous offices. He was a member of the Allamakee County Farm Bureau Board, served several terms as a Linton Township Trustee, and was active in American Legion. He volunteered his time by driving the transit van to the VA Hospital in Iowa City so area veterans could receive their care. Arvid was a great believer in the second amendment. He also really enjoyed spending a summer working road construction and operating heavy equipment in central Iowa.
His favorite pastimes included walking in the woods picking fruit and hunting mushrooms, getting together with friends and family to play cards or go out to eat, traveling with his 5th wheel camper, and dancing. For the past 12 years Arvid and Hedy have spent much of the winter in Texas.
