General Notes:
Notes for Henry Francis Lease Jr: Henry went West and located in Washington County, Iowa when he was twenty-three. Seven years later he moved to Bremer County, Iowa, locating on land entered for him by his brother. At the present time (1883) he owns 230 cultivated acres. He is the present town clerk and has held that office for twelve years. He also held the office of assessor for several years. He is a Republican, and he and his wife are members of the United Brethren in Christ. One of the early settlers in the Sumner area of Bremer County, Iowa was Henry and his family. They came from Hampshire Co., VA in 1847 in a covered wagon to Washington County. In 1853 he bought 160 acres five miles northwest of Sumner. In the early days he traveled to Dubuque to do his trading. Once when he was gone, leaving his wife and children at home, a band of Indians came and asked her for "Eks, Eks," holding their open hands up twice. She gave them the 20 eggs and they went on. A short time later a group of armed horsemen came by and asked if she had seen a band of Indians going by. She told them she had given them eggs and they had gone on. They told her then that Indians had massacred a whole village of people northwest of there. In 1857, when their little daughter died of the fever, they started a small cemetery on the back of their farm, which was to become the final resting place for six more. They had eleven children. Seven of these chose to remain in the Sumner community. Henry was a school teacher in Virginia. At least twelve of his descendants were or are teachers. His farm became a century farm a few years ago. His great grandchildren in the Sumner area are Leon Lease on the home farm, Mrs. Ed Muether, Mrs. Lloyd Goering, and Glenn and Olive Mae Lease. 2
