Joel Edwin was the Grandson of Dr. Samuel Thomson who develpoped the Thomsonion method of medicine.Joel used that system not only for his family but also for his friends and neighbors.Joel raised his family in Smithfield Township near Cedar Lake just a little NW of Waterloo in DeKalb County, Indiana. The Cedar Lake Cemetery is located on what was his Farm.


Joel married Maria Jane McBride, daughter of Richard McBride and Samanthe Smith, on 30 Nov 1845. (Maria Jane McBride was born on 26 Jul 1824 in Revenna, Portage County, Ohio, died on 21 Oct 1917 2 and was buried in Cedar Lake Cemetery, Smithfield Township, Dekalb County, Indiana 2.)
