Charity Banta ¹

Charity Banta was also known as Geertje Banta. She was also known as Geertruid Banta. Charity Banta was born on 3. Nov. 1749 at Hackensack, Bergen County, New Jersey. She was baptized on 3. Dec. 1749 at Dutch Reformed Church, Hackensack, Bergen County, New Jersey. She was the daughter of Hendrick Hendrikse Banta and Rachel Brouwer. Charity Banta married Francis Monfort, son of Jan Monfoort and Kniertje Marston, c 1767 at Conewago, York now Adams County, Pennsylvania. Charity along with her daughter Sallie/Sarah left her husband to join the Shakers. Francis declined to join the Shakers in 1805.

Charity Banta died on 6. Dec. 1828 at Shaker Village, Pleasant Hill, Mercer County, Kentucky, at age 79. She was buried at Shaker Cemetery, Pleasant Hill, Mercer County, Kentucky.
