Nigell, the first baron of Halton, is believed to be the son of Ivo (governor of Constantia in Normany) by Emme, sister to Adam earl of Bretagne. Nigel baron of Halton had two sons, William and Richard, as appears by the charter of the foundation of the abby of St Werburge in Chester by Hugh Lupus in 1093, and also according to the charter of confirmation to the said abby by Earl Richard in 1119, both of which both brothers were witnesses.
