Sarah Purdy

Sarah's stone states she was born in Chenango County, New York, but this has not been documented. Most of her children were born in the county, and her parents died in the county, but a 1790 U.S. Census record for the family in Chenango has not been located.
She was the daughter of James and Phebe (Purdy) Purdy. Sarah married Amos Smith probably in Chenango County. The family is in the 1800 and 1810 U.S. Census records for Norwich, Chenango, New York. The family then removed to Genesee County where they are found in the 1820 U.S. Census, but not in 1830.
After the death of Amos, Sarah married Jonathan Mason. The couple and some of her children were in Porter County, Indiana by 1836. Her daughter married John P. Noble in June of 1836, and Jonathan purchased land in 1837. (The land sale is recorded as La Porte County. Porter County was part of La Porte County until 1836, but apparently the word had not spread!)
Jonathan, Sarah, and one of her daughters, probably Harriet, were in the 1840 U.S. Census for Porter County. Jonathan was between 70 and 79. He died before 1850 as Sarah is found in the 1850 U.S. Census for Jackson Township, Porter County living with her daughter, Harriet, and husband, George Faulkner. (Jackson Township, in Porter County is next to New Durham Township in La Porte County. This is why members of this family who lived in Porter County are found in the Westville Cemetery.)
Note: I initially thought that James and Phebe were not the parents of Sarah as she is not mentioned in his will. The will for James can be found on familysearch.org. I found a link from a family tree on ancestry.com that took me to the will. There is also a tree on rootsweb.com: Smiths and Others, owner is: Susan. Her sources are: DAR Bible, Family and Individual Records (vol. 90, pp 258-269), Family Bible Records, and another family tree. This tree also lists as a source: wife of Jonathan Mason of Indiana per petition in father's probate file. This is the source that makes me believe that James and Phebe are her parents. The probate records for Chenango County on familysearch.org are a copy of the original books, there is not an index for all the entries pertaining to a family. I have not read the records to verify the petition of Sarah. 1
