He was the chief steward of John of Gaunt and constable of Grosmont and Monmouth Castles. His family never wavered in its loyalty to the House of Lancaster of Farleigh and Wellow, Somerset, and Heytesbury, Wilts, by his second wife, Joan, daughter and co-heiress of Sir Edmund Hussey, of Holbrook, Somerset, and widow of John Whyton, who was born about June 22, 1378.

He was nominated Knight of the Bath in 1399; returned to Parliament in 1400. He was preeminently distinguised in the French wars. He fought in the Battle of Agincourt, Oct 25, 1415. In May, 1416, he was one of the ambassodors nominated to treat with the Archbishop of Cologne. In Aug, 1416, he commanded the naval expedition to Harfleur.

As Steward of the Household to Henry V he was appointed, November 1, 1417, Constable of Windsor Castle.

In 1418 he was one of the English Commissioners sent to Rouen and received for his many services a grant of the castle and lordship of Hommet in Normandy.

Installed Knight of the Garter on May 3, 1421.

He was one of the executors of the will of Henry V and was on the Council of Regency in 1422.

In 1424 he was Steward of the Household to Henry VI and from 1426 to 1432, Lord High Treasurer.

He was summoned to Parliament from Jan 7, 1425-6 to Jan 2, 1448-9, by writs directed Walter Hungerford Chivaler whereby he is held to have become Lord Hungerford.


Walter married Catherine Peverill, daughter of Thomas Peverill of Parke, Hamatethy, Penhale, etc of County Cornwall and Margaret Courtney, before 18 Sep 1402. (Catherine Peverill was born in 1380 in Park, Hamatethy Penhale, Cornwall, England and died on 14 Jun 1426 in Cathedral, Salisbury, Wiltshire, England.)
