Knighted in 1603. Son of William and Rebecca Mennis Read of Folkstone, Kent. His son William immigrated from Kent to Boston Massachusetts in 1635.

William married Lucy Katherine Heanage, daughter of Esquire Michael Heneage Auditor and Keeper of the Records of the Tower of London and Grace Honiywood. (Lucy Katherine Heanage was born on 24 Feb 1586 in London, Greater London, England, died in Sep 1621 in Canterbury, Kent, England and was buried on 17 Sep 1621 in Canterbury Cathedral, Canterbury, Kent, England.)
