Albert Edward John Spencer, 7th Earl Spencer known formally as The Hon Albert Spencer until 1910 and from then until 1922 as Viscount Althorpe. He was born in London and the son of Charles Robert Spencer, 6th Earl Spencer and Margaret Baring. He married Cynthia Eleanor Hamilton.

The scholarly Seventh Earl dedicated himself to Althorpe's upkeep, cataloguing its contents, and opening it to scholars. His artistic positions including acting as a trustee to the Wallace Collection and the chairmanship of the Victoria and Albert Advisory Council.

Jack was the paternal grandfather of Diana, Princess of Wales and a British Peer. His godparents included King Edward VII.
