Margaret Georgiana Poyntz was born in Midgham House and was the youngest daughter of the Right Honorable Stephen Poyntz, governor to the Duke of Cumberland and in charge of the English army when it destroyed Bonnie Prince Charlie's Scots at Culloden. Her mother was Anna Maria Mordaunt, a former maid of honor to Queen Caroline.

Georgiana married John Spencer, 1st Earl Spencer on Dec. 20, 1755 in Althorp, Brington, Northamptonshire, England in a secret ceremony in the Oak Bedroom at Althorp on his twenty-first birthday.
