MORTIMER LEVERING, only surviving son of William H. In October, 1872, he married Miss Julia Henderson, a resident of the city.
Disposing of the business in 1874, they removed to Southern Florida, where they remained until 1876, when they returned to LaFayette, and Mr. Levering engaged in the real estate and loan business, in which he has been very successful, continuing in the same room in the First National Bank building.
He takes earnest interest in live stock, especially in sheep and horses, in which he is an acknowledged expert, evidenced by demands upon his time to exercise his judgment at live-stock fairs held in Eastern and other States, and he has visited England in the same interest.
For several years he was Secretary and Treasurer of the Tippecanoe County Fair Association, filling the offices very acceptably, He has served continuously as Secretary of the Indiana State Live-Stock Sanitary Commission since its creation, in 1889, by the Legislature. He was the founder and has been Secretary and Treasurer of the American Shropshire Sheep Association since its organization, in 1884. Has been Secretary of the American Shetland Pony Club for four years, and is Secretary of the Associated Sheep Organization of America. Is Chairman of the Registration Committee of the American Live-Stock Association. Is local statistical reporter of the United States Department of Agriculture and Bureau of Animal In dustry, and is an honorary member of a foreign live-stock association.

Mr. Levering's social tendencies lead him into many societies and companionable organizations. He is a member of both the Lincoln and LaFayette Clubs of the city, and of the Sons of the American Revolution. Is identified with numerous secret orders; a member of Tippecanoe Lodge, F. and A. M.; of LaFayette Chapter, No. 3, R. A. M.; Past Eminent Commander of LaFayette Commandery, No. 3, K. Mr. Levering's religious predelictions are inherited. He has for many years been a member of the Baptist Church, and in this connection is developed his inherent family gift for music. As a participant in the choir and a director of church music he has rendered val uable service.
Mr. L. has a very attractive residence, with extensive grounds, near to the city, where he indulges his penchant for cultivating fancy breeds of sheep, ponies and other live stock
