The family had migrated to Cape May, New Jersey. Jonathan, at 4 years of age, at the request of his uncle David, wh was a bachelor, was sent back to East Hampton. His uncle David died before he arrived, making his nephew, Jonatahan, his sole heir. The child lived with his grandfather, who at a proper age bound him to Thomas Osborn, a tanner and shoemaker.
Jonathan's father also died before he arrived at age 21. Soon after he came of age he went to Cape May, and received his share of his father's estate, amounting to 170 pounds, and returned to East Hampton. Soon after his return he married Esther, daughter of Cornelius Conklin, and shortly after they removed to Passaic Valley, New Jersey.
By deed bearing the date of 26 April, 1740, bought of John Pierson a tract of land "containing four score acres," lying adjoining and west of Nathaniel Smith's tract and adjoining the river, and having John Bedell, Jun. on the west on which he lived until his death.
Jonathan married Esther Conklin, daughter of Cornelius Conklin and Deborah Mulford, on 30 Jan 1739 in East Hampton, Suffolk County, Long Island, New York, USA.
