A man living there wrote us that he was sick) and found him in a pitiab le condition. He had dropsy and heart trouble and consumption and was filthy and dirty. I persuaded him to take medicine and to put on clean clohtes and have his bed cleaned up. The man who took car e of him could not get him to let them clean him up nor get him to take medicine after the doctor left it, He made application to go to the soldier's home at Leavenworth but they were afraid he woul d not live to get there, but after I left he did not give them any trouble about taking his medicine and he started for the Soldier's Home two weeks ago today. I have not heard anything from him since ."

Letter from Gideon Lease to his cousin, Cinly Diehl. Written 12 March, 1882.
Dear Cousin, With pleasure I will inform you that I am well pleased with that paper. You may do so again. I hope you are all well at present.
I have nothing to brack (sic). Although I still keep employed at the Range, you must excuse me for remaining quiet so long. We had quiet (sic) a snow on the twenty first of February and on the 8 an 9 of March.
It is about gone now and the geese went north. Well I did not hear from Mary since you spoke in your last letter. Rest of folks well as far as I know. Although I was not there for six months. I own the two farms blackened with the lead pencil. That farm in Cowley has forty acres broke out, and I want you to come and farm it for me. I will give you three bushels out of four. It is nice and level. I would farm it myself, but I have not much of a team. I have a little mule eleven hands high and a little wagon, front wheels two feet high and three feet track. I went to town with it once and they made an awfull fuss. I bought the sixty acres for two hundred and fifty dollars, and the one hundred and sixty for four hundred dollars subject to a mortgage of two hundred and fifty. O I guess you don't care to know about my farms, but I want to get me a lot in Grenola also. Here you can see how a little stream and little fishes in the stream runs on my sixty acres at present, and them little dots are little timber. I did not know what to write when I commenced but I am full now...yours, Gideon Lease, Grenola, Elk Co, Kansas. Write some time again and send me some Springfield papers and the farming world is nice. I wish I was also at home and taking care of my parent and Children. How is your boy Henry growing.
