John S. Toates, 60, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009, at the Flandreau Medical Center ER. Funeral services were at 11 a.m. today at the United Methodist Church in Flandreau with the Revs. Emil Eberhart, Joe Fahl and Morris Nelson officiating. Burial was in the Mt. Auburn Cemetery in Colman. John was born Dec. 10, 1948, at Flandreau to William and Edythe (Pickard) Toates. He graduated from Colman High School in 1967 and started farming northwest of Colman. John married Vera Dougherty on Nov. 2, 1971, in Colman. They moved to Piedmont in 1980 and then returned to Sioux Falls, where he worked construction. John moved to Colman in 1991 and worked general construction and owned rental properties .
John moved to Flandreau in 1995 and married Maridee Dailey on Jan. 7, 1995.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church where he served on various church boards, was chairman of the Moody County Republican Party, and was involved with Habitat for Humanity. John was a lifelong hunter and loved the outdoors .
He is survived by his wife, Maridee; five children, Tom Toates of Colman, Tanya (Chad) Mershon of Minneapolis, Michael (Jennifer) Toates of Colman, Joshua (Molly) Dailey of Rapid City and Lucas (Leah) Dailey of Flandreau; seven grandchildren; his mother, Edythe of Nixa, Mo.; two brothers , Raymond (LaNell) of Springfield, Mo., and Joseph (Georgianna) of Greenville, S.C.; four sisters, Lois (Rev. Joseph) Fahl of Nixa, Mo., Helen (Jim) Adams of Strafford, Mo., Betty (Rev. Paul) Powers of St. Johnsbury, Vt., and Phyllis (Rev. Dan) Smith, Vermontville, Mich.
He was preceded in death by his father, William.
