Janice Kay Harter King, 69, of 1328 Clark Ave., died at 7:45 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 2, 2008, at Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne.
Ms. King was born Sept. 26, 1938, in Bluffton, to Carl and Maxine Garton Harter.
She was a lifelong resident of Wells County and was a 1956 graduate of Bluffton High School. She worked at Fritz Electric, the Skiles Co., and retired from Simpson Industries after more than 20 years of employment. She was instrumental in getting a girls' baseball diamond established at Roush Park in the early 1970s and was always involved in girls' softball and baseball in Wells County. During the 1960s and 1970s she was a member of the traveling Fort Wayne Daisies baseball team and either played or coached in many of the Daisy tribute games. She was a member of the First Reformed Church of Bluffton.
Survivors include four sons, Tim (Leann) King of Geneva, Fla., Joe King of Fishers, and Chris (Barbara) King and Dave King, both of Bluffton; three grandchildren; three brothers, Robert Harter and Michael Harter, both of Bluffton, and Jack Harter of Fort Wayne; and two sisters, Betty Dellinger and Patty Mertz, both of Fort Wayne.
A brother, Bill Harter, preceded her in death.
Calling will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Thoma/Rich, Chaney and Lemler Funeral Home. Services will be held at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. Friday with Dr. Gene Bell officiating.
Burial will be at the Elm Grove Cemetery.
Preferred memorials are to the Bluffton Parks Department for use at Roush Park or to the American Diabetes Association. 2
