Notes for DANIEL LEASE III:

During the Civil War Daniel III had contracts to make uniforms for federal troops and due to the unsettled conditions in town sent his wife and children back to her people in Franklin Co., Ind. for safekeeping. He seems to have been afraid that James W. Lease might get out of hand. While there James W. started back to school and fell in love with his teacher. This was Emmelia Ripp. He proposed but she refused him and he returned with his Mother and the rest to Illinois when the War ended. Not satisfied with Emmelia Ripp's first refusal he returned to Indiana and pressed his suit to a successful conclusion. They were married in Franklin Co., Indiana in 1865. They moved back to Illinois. Dora the oldest girl was born at Bernadotte. Mother was born after they had moved by covered wagon to Scyene, Dallas Co., Texas. Whether Louisa Sparks Lease came with them when they moved I have not been able to establish. In an event she and Daniel III separated and she soon after came to live with James Wright. They moved to Palo Pinto County in 1880. Emmelia died of tuberculosis in 1883. James Wright married Emily Jordan.

In US 1850 Census Daniel is shown as living in Bernadotte town, Fulton, IL.

Obituary in the Astoria Argus - August 18, 1892

Died in Lewistown August 7, with ulcer of the stomach, Daniel Lease, age seventy-five years.

He came to this county in 1847 and was a merchant tailor in Bernadotte twenty-five years. He married Miss Sparks of Schuyler County in 1840 and settled in Bernadotte in that year. Four children were born to them, all of whom are living.

Daniel was an eccentric character and by economy and industry had accumulated considerable property. He had been a member of the M.E. Church for 40 years. He was a faithful husband, a kind father and a true friend. The needy was never turned away from his door.

The remains were buried in Lewistown.
