THOMAS J. BEVERLIN. Mr. Thomas J. Beverlin, one of the substantial farmers of Stanton township, was born in Wabash county, Illinois, Oct. 6th, 1840. His grandfather was one of the pioneers of Indiana, locating in Wayne county, and his father, William BEVERLIN, was born in that county, and there married Rebecca CUMMINS. By this union there were three children, of whom the second was Thomas J., the subject of this sketch.
When Mr. Beverlin was a small boy, his mother removed back to Wayne county, after the death of her husband, and resided with her father until Mr. Beverlin was about ten years of age when his mother re-married, moving first to the neighborhood of Lafayette, Indiana, and then to Illinois, near the line between Vermillion and Edgar counties. At this place Mr. Beverlin grew to manhood, and attended the district schools until sixteen years of age, when he became a student at the Western Manual Labor School near Rockville, Park county, Indiana, an institution under the control of Quakers. Here he remained four terms.
August 20th, 1861, he enlisted in the 37th regiment of Illinois infantry, and served for the first two years west of the Mississippi, and subsequently in the State of Texas. He was in the battles of Prairie Grove, Pea Ridge, and in minor engagements, and at the siege of Vicksburg. He was mustered out of service in 1864, and began farming in Park county, Indiana. In 1865 he carne to Edgar county, Illillois, and married there Martha E. STEVENSON, on the twelfth of September, 1865. In 1866 he came to Stanton township, Champaign county, Illinois, where he has since devoted his attention to agriculture, cultivating one hundred and twenty acres of land.
His family consists of five living children--William N., Lillie, Archibald, Omer, and Ernest.
Mr. Beverlin has always voted the Republican ticket, which indicates his political principles.
Thomas married Martha Elizabeth Stephenson on 12 Sep 1865 in Paris, Edgar, Illinois. (Martha Elizabeth Stephenson was born on 8 Sep 1844 in Tippecanoe, Tippecanoe, Indiana, USA, died on 19 Oct 1909 in Rock Island, Rock Island, Illinois and was buried in Woodlawn Cem, Champaign, Champaign, Illinois.)
