George J. Leas, 95, of Spring Garden Township, died at 10:15 p.m. Thursday, May 23, 2013, at the residence of his son. He was the husband of the late Dorothy L. "Dolly" (Hershner) Leas.
Born July 14, 1917, in Red Lion, a son of the late Mason E. and Eleanora (Diehl) Leas, he was a 19M36 graduate of William Penn High School.
He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, where he was an Electrician Mate 2nd Class, serving in the Pacific Theater of Operations. He retired in 1981 from the former Graybill Electrical Supply Company, where he worked for 50 years. After retirement he was employed by Mid-Hill Supply Company, the Medicine Shoppe, as well as working at the main entrance of the Grandstand at the York Fair.
His final retirement was at age 87. He was a member of Violet Hill United Methodist Church for 70 years where he taught Sunday school, served as a Lay Leader, and was a delegate to the United Methodist Annual Conference for many years. Very active in the Boy Scouts of America, he was the founder of Troop #134 at the church and served as its Scoutmaster for many years. He was a member of the Order of the Arrow where he served as advisor for a period of time. He was a 1971 recipient of the Silver Beaver Award, and served as Chairman of the Memorial Mall Committee at Camp Tuckahoe for many years. He was one of the leaders to the 1969 National Scout Jamboree in Coeur d' Alene, Idaho, and recently received the Daniel Carter Beard Masonic Scouting Award as well as the 50 Year Membership Award. A 32nd Degree Mason, his Masonic affiliations included White Rose Lodge No. 706, Free and Accepted Masons for 60 years, where he served as Worshipful Master in 1962. He was also a member of Harrisburg Consistory; White Rose Scottish Rite Club of York, where he was past President; Red Lion Scottish Rite Club; and Tall Cedars of Lebanon, York Forest #30, where he sang with the Chanters. Mr. Leas is survived by a son, G. Michael Leas and his wife, Carol of York; a granddaughter, Amanda Klotz and her husband, Daniel; three granddogs, Tate, Chesney, and Bear; and several nieces and nephews, all of whom will miss him dearly. He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Georgia Leas.
Funeral services are scheduled for 10 a.m. Thursday, May 30, 2013, at Kuhner Associates Funeral Directors, Inc., 863 S. George St., York, with The Rev. Wayne Shamer and The Rev. Richard Bowers officiating. Viewings will be 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, with Masonic services beginning at 7:45 p.m., and 9 to 10 a.m. Thursday.
Burial will be in Zion United Methodist Church Cemetery, Red Lion, with military rites presented by the York County Veterans Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Violet Hill United Methodist Church, 97 Tri Hill Road, York, PA 17403; or to New Birth of Freedom Council, Boy Scouts of America, 2139 White St., York, PA 17404.
