General Notes:
The family has always had that George W. Sandoe was born 16 Dec 1842 in Shenandoah, Schuylkill Co., PA. Correspondence from the Historical Society of Schuylkill County dated 17 Dec 2002 stated: "Shenandoah was formed out of Mahanoy Township about 1870. Mahanoy was formed from Rush Township about 1843. I checked the Rush Township census records for 1840 and 1850. I was unable to located the Sandoe name. Counties were not required to maintain vital statistics until 1897. Therefore, we must rely on Church records and newspaper articles for such information. We have no records for Rush Township. Signed: H.T. Crown, Research Volunteer"
There is an Eberhardt family bible as of Feb 2003 it was in the possession of Thurman Jester of Wooster Ohio. In that bible George is listed with birthdate of 16 Dec 1842 and Helen Eberhardt's birthdate is listed as 18 Aug 1844. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Death date obtained at the website of the Ohio Historical Society November 2002: http://www.ohiohistory.org/dindex, SANDOE, George W. date of death: 28 Jul 1915, County of Cuyahoga, Ohio, Volume #: 1687, Certificate No.: 37904 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ 1880 Census Canal Fulton, Stark Co, Ohio Family History Library Film: 1255067 NA File Number: T9-1067 Page Number: 47D (note surname transcribed on census transcript incorrectly) George SANDRE, 38, Born: PA, Occupation: Peddler Both parent's born: both in PA Ellen SANDRE, 37, Born: OH, Occupation: Housekeeper, Father: PA Mother: OH John SANDRE, 10, Born: OH, Occupation: Goes to school Jennie SANDRE, 8, Born: OH James A. Sandoe and Nancy Sandoe living in Butler County and their next door neighbors were the Eberhardts. I know that W.B. and Nancy had at least on son who was also a reverend and that was H.H. Sandoe born in 1841 in Shenandoah, Schuylkill County, PA. There is a biography on him in the History of Fairfield County Ohio. On this 1880 census W.B. Sandoe notes his own and his father's birthplace as PA. This city and county of birth matches what we had for George W. Sandoe, but as noted above "Shenandoah" of Schuylkill County did not exist until 1870 and both our George and H.H. Sandoe were born in the 1840s. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Individual noted on the 1900 Census State: OH County: Medina Twp: Medina Microfilm Roll #T623-1302. *The earlier 1880 census noted father's birthplace as PA ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- His great-granddauther, Dorothy (Sandoe) Snair recalls hearing that George Wesley Sandoe and family were followers of John Wesley, a famous preacher of the reformation that came out of Switzerland. There were at least three ministers, George Sandoe, W.B. Sandoe and H.H. Sandoe in Butler County PA who also had ties to some other places familiar to the family such as Wayne, Cuyahoga and Summit Counties in Ohio and Wooster, Ohio. Refer to the History of the Church of God easily found on the Internet for more information. Unfortunately, this history did not provide any biographical sketches on any of the ministers. The Reverend George Sandoe was born about 1827, too old to be our George. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- During conversation with Norman "Wayne" Sandoe on 6 Dec 2002, he stated that he discovered a George W. Sandoe as the first casualty of Gettysburg when he was in 8th Grade. This is not our George Sandoe as our George had children after the Civil War. He said that he spoke with Clyde Ellsworth Sandoe, Sr., about it and was told that the George who died in Gettysburg was a "distant Uncle" of Clyde's and he said that Clyde explained and described the monuments to the soldier George in Gettysburg. As an adult, Wayne visited Gettysburg and discovered the parks and monuments as Clyde described them. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 22 Feb 2003 received copy of death certificate:
