General Notes:
Individual found on Application for Marriage License #2352 at the Butler County Courthouse Man: John W. Sandoe, age 21, residence - Canal Fulton, OH, parents: George & Ellen, Occupation - farmer. Woman: Sarah L. Lutz, age 19, residence - Middle Lancaster, PA, Parents: John & Emily H. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Age: We had always had a birth year of 1872, but on the marriage license application he listed his age as 21. As they were married 18 Feb 1892, and he reported to be 21 then in April of 1892, he would have turned 22 years old making his birth year 1869-1870. This is also be supported by the 1880 census, which listed his age as 10.
Feb 2003 - A few pages of a family bible were found, perhaps the John W. Sandoe - Sarah Louise Lutz family bible, and the first "births" listed are that of John W. Sandoe, April 13, 1869 and Sarah L. Sandoe (nee Lutz) on 12 Jun 1873. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Individual found on correspondence date 8 Nov 2002 received from Zion Lutheran Church as being the husband of Sarah (Lutz) and being confirmed a member of the Church on 18 Dec 1892. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- His granddaughter, Dorothy (Sandoe) Snair recalls hearing that he became an alcoholic. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Occupations: John Wesley Sandoe worked at a postmaster for Butler County, on his marriage license application he noted his occupation as a farmer, and we know he was later a circus "roust-a-bout" for the Hageneck*Wallace Shows and died in the Great Circus Train Wreck of 1918, which occurred in Hammond, Indiana. There is a family story on John Wesley Sandoe perhaps surviving the wreck, however. His granddaughter, Virginia May (Sandoe) Peters, recalls her mother, Laura Evelyn (Corrigan) Sandoe relating an incident wherein she believed she saw her father-in-law some years after his alleged death. Laura recounted that one day (in the 1920s)she answered the door to find a door to door salesman (common in those days) and was startled because the man she saw was her supposedly dead father-in-law. The man quickly turned and walked away. She called for her husband, Clyde. but by time he got to the door and outside the man had disappeared. Hmmm??? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Upon a search at the Butler Courthouse in "Registration of Births 1893-1905" under "S" was listed Arla L. SANDOE, born 17 Jun 1895 to John W. SANDOE, farmer, and Jane Elizabeth SANDOE in Lancaster Township. It was recorded on 28 Dec 1895.
I do not believe it can be our John W. SANDOE, as the mother's surname is listed as SANDOE indicating she is a spouse because in this particular book of birth records the mother's maiden names were not listed. Plus, at that time, our John Wesley was already married to Sarah Louise LUTZ and had at least two children. Perhaps this John W. SANDOE is an Uncle or cousin of our John Wesley SANDOE.
The only other SANDOE birth recorded at the Butler Courthouse during the 1893-1905 period was that of our Laura Ellen SANDOE. She was listed as "Sandoe, Laura born on 1 Nov 1900 to Jno. SANDOE, laborer, and Sadie SANDOE." -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
