Newton was born, 7 Aug 1865, fifth of the nine children of Tobias S. and Mary Jane (Poe) Lease. Tobias was born, 19 Feb 1829, near Romney, Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia). His parents moved from Virginia to Ohio when he was a small child. In 1848, age 19, he moved to Holt County, MO, and became a farmer there. He served in the Union Army and received a severe wound to his left leg from a fragment of a shell, leaving his leg crippled for the rest of his life. He died 18 Dec 1898, Holt Co., MO. Mary Jane (Poe) Lease was born, 8 May 1834, Lancashire, Garrard Co., KY.

Newton T. Lease spent his boyhood on the Missouri farm. He worked as a farm hand and then learned telegraphy in the office of Kansas City, Fort Scott, Gulf Railway office. In Feb 1886, Newton located to Montana; for a time working in a general merchandise store in Chestnut Valley, joined a railroad survey party for the Montana Central Railway toward Great Falls. After construction began, he worked in the engineering department of the road the winter of 1886 to 1887. In Jun 1887, he became a government contracted carpenter, building barracks, barns, court houses, and schools and other private and public structures.

In Apr 1913, Newton was elected mayor of Great Falls, MT. In 1918, he was appointed a member of the State Council of Defense, and in 1919 appointed a member of the State Efficiency and Trade Commission. He was a member of the Great Falls Chamber of Commerce.

On 20 Jul 1892, Newton married Miss Nettie C. Stites, born Pleasanton, Linn County, KS. They had nine children: Esther Marie (died at age 12), Jessie F., Helen E., Howard S., Ruth Nettie, Alice Gertrude, Thomas S., Margaret Josephine, Rachel Dorothy.
