# Note: "Hendrick Banta, yoeman," made his will and a deed to his eldest son, Jacob for his farm. Son Jacob recorded this deed nine years later on July 19, 1717.

# Note: The early New Jersey colonists suffered many injustices from colonial governments. Many colonists were required to pay for their land several times. The original patents were voided. The new proprietors made many overlapping grants of land. Police and military protection were woefully inadequate. Between 1689 and 1692 there was no government of any kind in the Hackensack community. During that time, bands of hostile Indians and outlaws roamed the countryside. In 1700 the disgruntled colonists appealed for better government with the famous Remonstrance to the King of England.
