Born and raised in Brazil, Indiana, son of Charles and Elsie Roeschlein. He graduated from Purdue University with a degree in Electrical Engineering.

Eugene entered the Navy May 24, 1943 but went active service July 1, 1943. He was commissioned February 24, 1946. Eugene was in the Navy Supply Corps serving on supply ships supporting ships and land bases in the Pacific during WWII. Eugene became a Lieutenant in the US Navy Reserves in the Supply Corps January 7, 1953. He was discharged from active duty October 30, 1953 and Honorably Discharged from the service June 30, 1961. While in the service, Eugene was awarded the WWII Victory Medal, American Area Campaign Medal, the Navy Reserve Medal, and National Defense Service Medal. He also received a Certificate of Appreciation from the State of Indiana June 1, 1954.

Gene and Betty Jean raised seven children. They lived for a short time in Spokane, Washington and Minneapolis, Minnesota working for Honeywell, but then settled here in Indianapolis working for Naval Avionics Facility where he retired.

He loved sailing and was part of a 1961 Y-Flyer boat building group that built 12 boats. From this group of Y's built he became the owner of Y-1809. His love of sailing extended to his children and they continue to sail today. He was granted a lifetime honorary membership of the Indianapolis Sailing Club.

In the basement of their house, Gene set up his ham radio operation (K9QYI). This is where he also built some early computers and created some computer games. Astronomy was a big interest and he even had a star named for his wife. He enjoyed camping when their kids were young and later purchased a camper so he and Betty Jean could travel the country. They often visited their daughters Janet and Dorothy when they lived in Seattle, Washington. They visited England when son, Elwood was stationed there in the Air Force and Germany when Janet's husband was stationed there. Photography was another of his major interests with thousands of photos to document his life and his view of the world.

Preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean; daughter, Dorothy; and son, Douglas (wife, Dorita survives) and sister, Nina. Survived by son, Elwood and wife, Linda; daughters: Janet, Wanda and husband, Kevin; son, Howard and wife Stacy; son, Stephen and wife, Katy; grandchildren: Matthew, Jennifer, Dustin, Joshua, Samuel, Michelle and Megan; and great-grandchildren, Owen and Aidan.

Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, September 6, 2013 at Flanner and Buchanan- Lawrence , 5215 N. Shadeland Avenue, Indianapolis. Friends may call from 4 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Thursday, September 5, 2013 at the funeral center. Burial will be in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Donations: Gene enjoyed gardening and flowers, but you may also choose to donate to the Indianapolis Sailing Club on Gene's behalf.
