General Notes:
Jane Walker, born September 7, 1804 in Knox County, Tennessee and died April 27, 1885 in Henry County, Iowa. Jane married Thomas Chapman Leas, who was born in 1802 in Pennsylvania and apparently died before 1850. They were married February 9, 1826 in Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana.
Jane Walker was the seventh child of George and Julian Jean [Welsh] Walker. Born September 7, 1804 in Knox County, Tennessee, Jane moved with the family to Indiana before 1820. There she married Thomas Chapman Leas (sometimes spelled Lease) on February 9, 1826 in Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana; he was born 1802 in Pennsylvania. Jane and Thomas lived in Covington, Indiana, had four children before he apparently died sometime between 1835 and 1850.
Their children were:
* George Washington Leas, born July 4, 1827 in Covington, Fountain County, Indiana. George married Emily Rodgers in 1844 in Mount Pleasant, Henry County, Iowa. George & Emily had at least one son, George Jr., born July 7, 1869. * Mary Jane Leas, (also known as "Versey"). Mary was born June 22, 1829 in Covington, Fountain County, Indiana. Versey married Hugh Rodgers (born about 1828 in Ohio) on January 29, 1852 in Henry County, Iowa. They had a daughter, Luella, who married a man named Roberts. Hugh apparently died before 1860, as on December 20, 1860, Versey married Samuel Lee, himself a widower; his first wife had been Louisa Burge. Sam was born November 4, 1827, in Bond County, Illinois. Sam and Mary Jane had four children: John W. Lee, Florence Lee (who married J. E. Peterson, an early important businessman of New London, Iowa), Cora Alice Lee, and Charity Jane Lee (who married Francis H. Seaton). Mary Jane Lee died in 1900 in New London, Henry County, Iowa; Sam Lee died in 1915, also in Henry County. * James W. Leas, born April 1, 1832 in Covington, Fountain County, Indiana; died in 1915. (According to a letter from Jane's brother James, sons George and James were recently back from a trip to California in 1861.) James fought in the Civil War and is mentioned in a letter written by his cousin, John Wesley Hardin, to Francis & Catherine Walker. He married Celia Willeford and they had at least four children. Follow the link on James's name to read of their descendants. * Thomas E. Leas, born October 4, 1835 in Covington, Fountain County, Indiana; died unknown (probably as an infant or child).
After Thomas Chapman Leas (apparently) died, Jane Walker moved to Henry County, Iowa, where, perhaps as early as 1839, she and two of her children were living with the family of her sister and brother-in-law, Rebecca [Walker] and John F. Tryer. In 1880 she was living with the family of her daughter, Mary Jane (Versey) and Samuel Lee. Jane [Walker] Leas died April 27, 1885 in Henry County, Iowa.
Jane married Thomas Chapman Leas, son of George Leas and Mary "Polly" Weems, on 9 Feb 1826 in Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana, USA. (Thomas Chapman Leas was born in 1802 in Pennsylvania, USA and died on 4 Jul 1849 in Fort Laramie, Goshen County, Wyoming, USA 3.)
