[The Mennonites of the Kuhbornscheshof in the Vicinity of Katzweiler]
"The Kuhborncheshof (the name of a Hof, or landed estate), on the hill country
west of Katzwweiler, is listed as one of the larger
Mennonite settlements in the Palatinate.
The supposed origine of the estate was under the Crown Elector Karl Philipp
through the Elector's court in Heidelberg. On the date
of January 19, 1717 the Mennonite Hans Heinrich Lattschar by the 'Kipp Henges
Brennen' (by the spring on the Kipp slope) was
given a piece of land 220 acres (the acre equivalent of a Morgen is hard to
state, for it varies from time to time and place) as an
inheritance, for which he was to pay eight measures of rye and seven measures of
oats to Martin for the right to the slope on the
Lauter (Lauter, in this case refers to the river in the area).
'Kipp Henges Brennen' indicates that there was a spring that belonged to Henchen
(Henry) Kipp, and from this old name
'Kuhbornscheshof' came into existence.
Hans Heinrich Lattschar, a Mennonite, who fled for his faith out of the
Simmenthal (Simmen Valley) in the Canton Bern,
Switzerland, by way of the Alsatian cathedral (Masmunster) in 1715 into the
Palatinate, originally cultivated the land with his wife
and children and built the Hoff, (landed estate). He is the original ancestor of
the widely branched Zipp Lattschar (Latschar,
Latscha) family, who lived on the estate for 250 years, and still occupys it as
well as many other parts of the Palatinate and of the
German Confederation. Two sons of the immigrant emigrated to Pennsylvania as
early as 1728 and 1741. From there the family
spread out, even to Canada. And in later years more families moved to the USA
from Kuhborncheshof."
