Information provided by Mary Ellen Grable. Jr. entered the service Sep 15, 1942 and after extensive training in six different states, he went overseas on Jan 5, 1945. Sgt Leas was the right gunner in a B-29 Super Fortress that was brought down by anto-aricraft fire on a bombing mission from Guam to Tokyo. It was his 14th mission as a gunner.

DEATH OF SGT. JOHN LEAS
IN APRIL 1945, CONFIRMED

Mr. and Mrs. John C. Leas, Sr., Tunnel Hill, have received official confirmation from the adjutant general in Washington that their son, Sgt. John C. Leas, Jr. was killed in action April 15, 1945.

Sgt. Leas was the right gunner in a B-29 Super fortress that now has been established as brot down by anti-aircraft fire on a bombing mission from Guam to Tokyo. It was a night raid and Sgt. Leas' 14th mission as a gunner.

Born Aug. 17, 1920, he graduated from Union high school in 1940. He entered service Sept. 15, 1942 and after extensive training in six different states, he went overseas on Jan. 5, 1945.

Surviving beside the parents are three brothers, Wayne, Conesville, Rolland and Donis of the home, and two sisters, Marcella and Ruth of the home.
